Introduction:
Paal Payasam is a creamy and delicious rice pudding, traditionally made during Onam celebrations. It’s a sweet treat that’s loved by all ages. This recipe is simple enough for children to help with, and older kids might even make it by themselves with a little supervision. Let’s dive into making this delightful dessert!
Fun Fact:
Did you know? Payasam is considered a must-have dish during Onam Sadhya, the grand feast, and is often served as the final course to end the meal on a sweet note!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup rice (any short-grain rice works well)
- 1 liter whole milk
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
- A few cashew nuts (optional)
- A few raisins (optional)
- 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter, optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Ingredients:
- Wash the rice thoroughly and drain the water.
- Measure out all the other ingredients and keep them ready.
2. Cook the Rice:
- In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, pour in the milk and bring it to a boil. This step might need adult supervision or assistance.
- Once the milk is boiling, add the washed rice. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer.
- Stir occasionally to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
3. Add the Sugar:
- When the rice is cooked and soft (this will take about 30-40 minutes), add the sugar to the pot.
- Stir well until the sugar dissolves completely into the mixture.
4. Flavor with Cardamom:
- Add the cardamom powder to the mixture and stir well.
- Let it cook for another 5-10 minutes until the payasam thickens to your desired consistency.
5. Optional Step – Fry Cashews and Raisins:
- In a small pan, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add the cashew nuts and fry until golden brown.
- Remove the cashews and in the same pan, fry the raisins until they puff up.
- Add the fried cashews and raisins to the payasam and stir.
6. Serve:
- Let the payasam cool slightly. Serve warm or chilled, as per your preference.
Tips for Kids:
- Younger Kids: Can help with washing the rice, measuring the ingredients, and stirring the pot (with supervision).
- Older Kids: Can manage the entire process with supervision for boiling milk and frying nuts and raisins.
Additional Activity:
- Decorate Your Dish: Let the kids get creative by garnishing the payasam with extra nuts or even a sprinkle of saffron if you have it. They can make fun patterns or simply enjoy adding the finishing touches.
